Editor - Job Specification

As the Editor, you are responsible for the editorial content of the newspaper. Your aim is to develop and progress the Title in order to increase sales and readership, and thereby generate greater advertising revenue.
As Editor, the Employee will be required to fulfil all duties commensurate with this position in a professional manner, which duties include but are not limited to the
following:

Staff Organisation

As Editor you will have responsibility over the editorial team, including staff photographers. This responsibility includes the following:
- allocation of markings, stories or other duties to journalists/reporters, the booking of photographers and the hiring of freelances
- responsible for deciding which events and functions are covered and will be expected to generate a range of off-diary news stories
- expected to ensure that all editorial staff contribute fully to the development of the paper
- ensuring all journalists/reporters have a constructed working week
- ensuring that appropriate training of journalists/reporters is addressed; however, such training should take place mostly on days other than main production days.
- ensure that the office is covered at all times during the working week
- ensure that photographers know their listing; the Editor is responsible for the diary listing, not the photographers. If freelance have to be used theEditor will arrange this cover. Freelance cover arrangement is not to be delegated to the
photographers. Every effort must be made to ensure that freelance cover is kept to a minimum
- ensure staff fulfil their contracts.
- competent usage of media publishing and IT systems.
- take photographs in the non-availability of a staff photographer.
- production standards are maintained and meet deadlines.
- liaise/hold meetings with the advertising manager over features, advertorial and advertising sales leads on a frequent and regular basis.
- ensure a record book of staff whereabouts is held at reception and kept up to date.
Records must be kept to ensure the Company and the Editor knows where all staff are during working hours. Such record will assist in the efficient operation of the newspaper especially for health and safety purposes.
- When on leave, ensure the person editing up can perform the role of Editor.

Content Control

The Editor will have full control over copy. Such control means that the Editor:
- will handle all copy from staff, contributors or in the form of press releases, via post, fax or e-mail
- will have the final say in relation to the news and sport content of the paper.
Advertising is the responsibility of the advertising manager and should take priority to editorial.
- will be expected to work in tandem with the advertising manager in relation to advertisements and pagination
- encourage and assist advertising by ensuring that one journalist is able to write
editorial copy for advertising. Advertorials are not to be greater than the size of the display advert being purchased by the advertiser, and in any case advertorial should not be the norm
The Editor must adhere to the Board's direction on the following:
- rules and style for tabloid and broadsheet newspapers/supplements Management
The Editor will also be expected to fulfil a range of management functions in the office to ensure the operation of a smooth and efficient newsroom.
- ensure that production deadlines set are met in order that the newspaper is printed
in time for publication day
- ensure that editorial copy is made available throughout that entire week not just immediately prior to deadlines
- monitoring editorial staff performance and behaviour while representing the paper
- supervise time keeping and working hours of editorial staff
- approve days off and annual leave arrangements of editorial staff and production
staff (if co-located); however, ensuring that sufficient staff are working on any
one day to get the newspaper printed in time for publication day
- staff expense claim forms are to be checked so that no claims are made without
the Editors approval. Motor vehicle to be used where available
- ensuring staff respect health and safety policies
- ensuring that house keeping standards are maintained

The Editor will be expected to decide when to sanction freelance work (within budget) and pass on invoices for such work to accounts. Concern for expenditure levels must be given at all times with regard to freelancecorrespondents/photographers etc.
You are expected to keep Senior Management aware of all aspects of editorial management, personnel management and expenditure.
